Inclusivity & Accessibility
Our pledge to Inclusivity & Accessibility
At Pioneer Centre, we believe that the joy of outdoor activities should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background, ability, or circumstance. Our commitment to inclusivity is at the core of our values, and we strive to create an environment that welcomes individuals from all walks of life. We are dedicated to providing a welcoming space for everyone. We are passionate about breaking down barriers and ensuring that the thrill of outdoor activities is within reach for all.
- Positive attitude, training and awareness: Our team undergoes regular training and is dedicated to meet the diverse needs of all participants, fostering a non-judgemental environment of encouragement and support.
- Affordable access: We offer competitive prices throughout our offers, with seasonal prices for school groups and special packages like Adventure weekends to ensure that cost is not a barrier.
- Financial support and fundraising events: In cooperation with our charity NAYC we are committed to find funding opportunities like our PotentiALL Bursary fund to support those who need it the most, so that no child misses out. We regularly apply through various funding schemes for special equipment to adapt activities for individuals with varying needs.
- Venue spaces & accommodation: Our venue is all under one roof and on the ground floor. We also have a number of universally accessible bedrooms with wet room facilities.
The following activities have an alternative accessible option.
Wheelchair Abseiling Tower
Our abseiling tower is designed for participants who use wheelchairs to feel comfortable and secure abseiling down the 45-degree ramp in their own wheelchair or in our specialist wheelchair. Participants can control their own speed as they descend alongside a qualified instructor.
Wheelchair Zipwire
Participants get hoisted up to our Zipwire platform and transferred onto the Zipwire system smoothly, allowing them to take part in this high-octane activity. Specially trained instructors will lower the participant back into their chair when they reach the brake pad at the bottom.
Wheelchair Trek course
Participants get hoisted up to our Trek-course platform and transferred onto two safety lines so that they can take part in our most sought-after traversing activity. An instructor will accompany you around the eight different at height obstacles. Guide your way through the tunnels, over the wobbly logs and much more. To finish, the instructors will transfer you back to the comfort of your own chair using the specially designed winch system.
Wheelchair Climbing and High ropes
Embrace the challenge of climbing and high ropes using our pulley system which is designed to lessen the load on the climbers’ arms and legs whilst climbing. Our hoist system allows participants to be lifted out of their wheelchair and taken to the top of a climbing wall. There is an option for the participant to lift themselves with a handle added into the system.
Accessible Archery
Our fully equipped archery ranges ensure that everyone can participate in learning how to shoot a bow and practise to improve their skills. Our self-standing bow allows participation for anyone who might not be able to support the weight of a bow themselves and our self-standing crossbow allows for everyone to take part no matter the ability, along with more aids and extra equipment you can use to master the art of getting the gold.
Accessible Fencing
We have three different types of foil that can be chosen from: metal, plastic and foam. After picking a foil, a wheelchair user can be paired with another wheelchair user, or a carer/teacher/peer sitting in a chair.
Accessible Caving
Explore our man-made caving systems accessible for all with the ability to support their upper body to some extent. Our 12 wheeled manoeuvrable seat allows for guests to be pulled around the system by an instructor.
Accessible Orienteering
Try our wheelchair accessible orienteering routes, designed to provide challenge to groups of people whilst being entirely wheelchair friendly across the different terrain of our 25-acre site.

Adaptive Activities
"Adventure without barriers. Our adaptive activities use specialist equipment, inclusive design and skilled instructors to enable people of all abilities to enjoy exciting outdoor and indoor experiences."
As well as our adaptive activities, we follow the philosophy of “Not Everyone Takes Part in the Same Way, But Everyone Takes Part.”
We recognise that every participant has different strengths and support needs. Our instructors use adaptive approaches and alternative roles to ensure that everyone can be meaningfully involved in each activity, regardless of ability. Whether acting as a team leader, navigator, scorekeeper, equipment manager or chief water-sprayer, everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute and be part of the adventure.

The activity has been designed to enable a wide range of participants to take part, including those with physical disabilities and additional support needs.
Participants access the zip wire using adapted systems and specialist equipment where required. Our team will discuss each participant’s individual needs in advance to ensure appropriate support and adaptations are in place.
Where transfers are required, a hoist is available and our qualified instructors can assist throughout the process. Most participants will use our specialist adaptive seating system, which is designed to provide comfort, support and security during the activity.

A typical session lasts approximately 1.5 hours, allowing time for equipment fitting, transfers where required, safety briefings and multiple opportunities for participants to enjoy the activity.
We encourage groups to discuss any access requirements, medical considerations, communication needs or support requirements with us before booking so that we can tailor the experience to each participant.
Abseiling
Our Adaptive Abseiling session takes place outdoors on our specially designed, wheelchair-accessible tower, giving participants the opportunity to experience the excitement and achievement of abseiling in a supportive and inclusive environment.
The activity is suitable for participants aged 8 years and above. Access to the top of the tower is provided via a ramp, allowing wheelchair users and those with reduced mobility to reach the activity area comfortably.
Most participants transfer into our specialist adaptive abseiling chair before descending. We have a hoist available to support transfers where required, and our instructors can assist throughout the transfer process. In some circumstances, participants may be able to abseil in their own wheelchair, subject to a discussion and individual assessment with our instructional team.
Sessions are led by two qualified instructors. One instructor remains at the top of the tower to manage the rope system and support the participant during the setup, while the second instructor descends alongside the participant to provide reassurance and assistance throughout the abseil.
A typical session lasts approximately 1.5 hours, allowing time for equipment fitting, safety briefings, transfers, and multiple opportunities for participants to engage with the activity.
Adaptive Abseiling is designed to be as inclusive as possible and can be suitable for a wide range of physical abilities. The course is designed to encourage confidence, independence, problem-solving and teamwork while ensuring participants feel safe and supported.

Sensory Swing
The Sensory Swing is one of our most popular indoor activities, offering a fun, calming and highly personalised experience for participants of all abilities. Taking place in our large indoor hall, the Mackenzie Room, the activity combines movement, music and sensory stimulation in a safe and supportive environment.
Participants are supported in a specialist swing and can enjoy being moved around the room at a pace that suits them. Some participants prefer a gentle, relaxing sway, while others enjoy faster movement and the feeling of speed. The experience is tailored to everyone’s comfort level and preferences throughout the session.
To make the activity even more engaging, participants can choose their favourite music to listen to while using the swing. Whether they enjoy upbeat songs, familiar favourites or calming music, the session can be adapted to create an experience that is enjoyable and meaningful for them.
The Sensory Swing is suitable for people of all abilities and can be particularly beneficial for participants who enjoy sensory-based activities, movement experiences or opportunities to relax and regulate in a supportive environment. Our instructors work closely with participants, carers and support staff to ensure the experience is tailored to individual needs.
The activity can help promote confidence, enjoyment, sensory engagement and emotional wellbeing, while providing a unique and memorable experience.
Climbing
Our Adaptive Climbing & High Ropes activity gives participants the opportunity to challenge themselves both vertically and at height, combining climbing with high ropes elements in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Participants can test their confidence, balance and problem-solving skills as they make their way up the climbing wall and around high ropes challenges. The activity is designed to provide achievable challenges for a wide range of abilities, allowing individuals to progress at their own pace and celebrate their successes along the way.
To make the activity as accessible as possible, we offer two different support systems depending on a participant’s needs:
Adaptive Climbing Pulley System
For participants with reduced strength or stamina, our assisted climbing pulley system helps reduce the physical demands of climbing while still enabling them to take an active role in the experience.
Adaptive Hoist Climbing System
For participants who may be unable to use a traditional climbing setup, we have an adaptive hoist climbing system. Participants are securely seated in a specialist harness and can lift themselves upwards by pulling on a bar connected to the climbing rope. This allows individuals to experience the sensation and achievement of climbing in a way that suits their abilities, while remaining actively involved in their ascent.
Whether a participant’s goal is to reach the top of the climbing wall, complete part of the high ropes course, or simply try something new, our instructors provide encouragement and support throughout the session. The focus is not on how far or how high someone climbs, but on personal achievement, confidence building and enjoying the experience.
Suitable for participants aged 8 years and above, this activity can be adapted to meet a variety of needs and abilities. It is ideal for individuals and groups looking to build confidence, resilience and self-belief through adventure-based challenges.

Archery
Our Adaptive Archery activity gives participants the opportunity to develop focus, coordination and confidence while enjoying the challenge of aiming for the target. Whether someone is trying archery for the first time or building on existing skills, the activity can be adapted to suit a wide range of abilities and support needs.
Participants can choose from different types of equipment depending on their individual needs and abilities. For many participants, we use an adaptive crossbow-style bow, which requires minimal physical strength to operate and allows people with a wide range of mobility levels to take part successfully. This option enables participants to focus on aiming and accuracy while enjoying the satisfaction of hitting the target.
For participants who can draw a bowstring using one arm, we also offer traditional standing bows. Wheelchair users who have the strength and range of movement to use a standard bow are welcome to shoot directly from their wheelchair, allowing them to enjoy a more traditional archery experience without needing to transfer.
Adaptive Archery is suitable for participants aged 8 years and above and can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace, making it ideal for individuals and groups alike. Whether participants are aiming for the bullseye, competing with friends, or simply enjoying trying something new, the activity provides a fun and rewarding experience for all abilities.
Our instructors provide full guidance and support throughout the session, helping participants develop their technique, build confidence and celebrate their achievements.
Caving
Our Adaptive Caving activity offers participants the opportunity to explore the excitement and mystery of an underground environment in a safe, supportive and inclusive way. The activity allows individuals to experience narrow passages, fascinating rock formations and the adventure of caving, while adaptations are available to meet a wide range of physical abilities and support needs.
Participants can explore the cave system at their own pace, with our instructors providing guidance and support throughout the experience. The focus is on discovery, teamwork and enjoying the adventure of accessing an environment that many people may never have had the opportunity to experience before.
To help make the activity accessible, we have a range of adaptive methods available. For participants with limited mobility, we can use a 12-castor caving board, which allows individuals to be moved through sections of the cave by instructors and support staff. Where appropriate, we can also use a bedsheet drag system to assist participants through areas where other mobility equipment may not be suitable.
Our instructors work closely with participants, carers and support staff before the session to understand individual needs and determine the most appropriate adaptations. As every participant and every caving experience is different, access arrangements are planned on an individual basis to ensure everyone can enjoy the adventure as fully as possible.
Unlike many adventure activities, there is no minimum age requirement for Adaptive Caving, making it accessible to a broad range of participants and groups.
Adaptive Caving provides a unique opportunity to experience adventure, build confidence and be part of a shared team experience. Many participants enjoy the sense of exploration, achievement and excitement that comes from travelling through an underground environment and discovering what lies around the next corner.
Fencing
Our Adaptive Fencing activity introduces participants to the fast-paced and tactical sport of fencing in an inclusive and supportive environment. Combining quick reactions, concentration and strategy, fencing offers a unique challenge that can be enjoyed by a wide range of abilities.
Participants learn the basics of fencing, including movement, attacking, defending and scoring points, before putting their skills into practice in friendly bouts. The activity can be adapted to suit individual ability levels, allowing everyone to experience the excitement of the sport.
To make fencing accessible to more participants, we have a range of adaptive equipment available. We have two Swordseats©, developed by Fencing GB, which allow wheelchair users with upper body movement and control to participate in fencing from a stable seated position. Participants may also choose to fence directly from their own wheelchair where appropriate.
We recognise that standard metal fencing weapons may not be suitable for everyone, so we also offer plastic and foam weapons for participants who would benefit from lighter equipment. This allows individuals to focus on developing their skills, confidence and enjoyment without being limited by the weight of the equipment.
Our instructors tailor the session to each participant’s needs, ensuring the activity remains safe, engaging and enjoyable. Whether participants are learning fencing for the first time or simply looking for a fun new challenge, Adaptive Fencing provides an exciting opportunity to build confidence, coordination and decision-making skills.
Orienteering
Our Adaptive Orienteering activity encourages participants to explore the outdoors, solve problems and develop navigation skills in a fun and engaging way. Using maps, clues and checkpoints, participants work independently or as part of a team to find their way around a course, building confidence and decision-making skills along the way.
The activity can be adapted to suit a wide range of abilities and support needs. We offer wheelchair-accessible routes, allowing participants to navigate the course using accessible pathways while enjoying the same challenge and sense of achievement as other participants.
For individuals who may find traditional map reading or navigation difficult, we also provide simplified routes and instructions. These adaptations can help participants who benefit from clearer visual information, reduced complexity or additional guidance, ensuring that everyone can take part and enjoy the experience.
Participants are encouraged to work at their own pace, developing teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills while exploring the environment around them. The activity can be tailored to focus on fun, learning, competition or personal achievement depending on the needs and goals of the group.
Our instructors provide support throughout the session and can adapt the level of challenge to suit individual participants, making Adaptive Orienteering accessible and enjoyable for a broad range of ages and abilities.
Accessibility in our Buildings
