Optimizing Hive Life
Planning the Ultimate Team-Building Trip for Your Busy Bees
When life gets busy it can feel like your team has come to life like the buzzing of a thriving beehive preparing for a cold winter. But unlike the unending service of a common worker bee, your team members simply cannot function in an effective way if they are buzzing around the building, going from task to task with little to no respite over the years. The value of trip out with your team can sometimes be forgotten in the hustle of everyday life, but it doesn’t change the fact that taking a step back from the norm can help strengthen team bonds, unlock potential in inspiring team leaders, and give everyone a chance to relax and take a step back from the daily grind.
A residential trip with your team can, surprisingly, hold many similarities with that of the life cycle of a common worker bee.
Do Some Spring Cleaning
Keeping a clean hive lets the next generation of worker bees to be raised up in a welcoming environment. Similarly, when your start your residential trip, you want to start on a fresh slate to make sure your event and your plans are not cluttered with the nonsense of yesterday’s ventures. Start with a team gathering in one of our versatile meeting rooms, where you can begin your visit by running through your timetable, passing along vital event information to your team, and build excitement for what is to come. This is also a good time for your team leaders to set their expectations for the event, and plan support and mentorship opportunities for those under their care. For your team, this is a fantastic opportunity to ask questions and begin to unwind – the time for fun has arrived.
Take Care of Others
Bees work together to feed and maintain the colony. Just like the bees, it’s now time for your team to wind down and nurture their bodies both mentally and physically. Plan moments into your schedule for social connection such as a sweet treat break in your private lounge, a relaxed coffee catch-up with their team leader in a designated venue space, or mildly (or very!) competitive game of pool in our reception common room. Giving your team the chance to relax in a stress-free environment, you’ll be surprised by what you discover when your team are allowed to be their own unique selves.
Spend Time with Leaders
Worker bees will spend a few days of their life by the queen’s side, feeding and caring for her. Similarly to this stage, having the chance to interact directly with their team leaders can boost productivity, encourage trust, and give opportunities for mentorship. Consider booking in one-on-one time for each team leader to sit down with their team to offer mentorship, set goals, and provide support for areas of need.
After your one-on-one meetings, why not host a formal meal or awards night to celebrate success within your ventures? You can create official awards (or silly ones like ‘world’s best cuppa tea maker’ if you fancy it!) to highlight personal achievements over the year, or just pop on some fun tunes and dance the evening away with a heart pumping disco session.
Lay a Strong Foundation
Honeycomb is not only a pretty pattern but also creates a stable foundation for the hive and helps the colony succeed. You can also help set your team up for success by hosting a gathering to discuss your future plans. Remember, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail so take the time with your team members to troubleshoot problems they’ve been facing, refresh their skills through workshops and group discussion, and come up with a plan to make things even more amazing when you return to day-to-day life.
Give Them a Purpose
Some bees serve a vital and significant role in protecting the hive, ready to attack any approaching invaders. Within the daily tasks of our work lives, we don’t find ourselves fending off pests (unless someone forgets to close their window of course haha!) but there is one key factor that relates this role to ourselves as humans – we need to have a purpose in life. It can be difficult to see the purpose of your role when you are buried under overdue to-do lists. Use your residential trip to reconnect your team with their purpose, remind them of your mission, and set their hearts on fire again with inspiration.
